Introduction
Welcome to the Leslie F. Malpass Library. You are here because your success in this class and beyond is dependent on finding information. In libraryland, we call this "information literacy." An information literate student can recognize when information is needed and has the ability to locate, evaluate, manage, and use effectively the needed information.
Assignment
Investigate the life of an accomplished individual of African descent and write an article or report, based on research, which succinctly discusses her/his contributions to African Americans and to society. You are also expected to indicate how this individual would react to current examples of continuing racism in America and African Americans’ responses to these challenges. You may choose to direct your writing towards an audience of African Americans, an audience of Anglo-Americans, or a racially/ethnically diverse audience. Allow the philosophy and legacy of the individuals to guide your writing which you will share with the class.
Objectives
- become familiar with standard information retrieval tools in African American Studies
- execute effective and efficient search strategies
