Finding Test and Survey Instruments @ WIU: Identify a Test to Use

How to locate educational and psychological tests and surveys to use for your research project.

Identify a Test to Use

Test Reviews Online A good starting place for your research is the Mental Measurements Yearbook which is available on Level 2 of the Malpass Library (REF. Z5814.E9 T47) and has been published since 1938. Test Reviews Online indexes the set from the 9th edition to the present so you won't have to look at individual volume indexes unless your test predates 1985. Search for a test by title, author, scale, or topic. Then go to the corresponding volume and page of MMY for evaluative and availability information. Alternatively, you could look at this alphabetical list of tests covered by MMY since 1985. Buros offers a guide on How to Use the Mental Measurements Yearbook
TestLink Database If you didn't find the test you want in Test Reviews Online, try this index to unpublished and lesser-known, harder-to-find instruments.  TestLink does not include reviews but often has an abstract, availability information, and bibliographic citations.
Questionnaire Instrument Compendium You may want to try the Social-Personality Psychology Questionnaire Instrument Compendium (QIC) to find an instrument available online. This site is maintained by Alan Reifman, Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Texas Tech University and is a listing of instruments by topic, title, and author.
Subject Databases Some databases like PsycInfo can help you identify a test to use. The "TM Tests & Measures" option searches exact titles of tests used in the study, so if you have not yet identified a specific test, try instead a search that combines your topic with keywords like "test or survey or questionnaire". If you are hoping to find the actual instrument published in the journal article, you can try including the keyword "appended," but be advised that this happens very rarely, and usually only with lesser-known tests. The same holds true for the ERIC database.
