Biological Sciences: Zoology

A consortium of natural history and botanical libraries is cooperatively digitizing older publications related to biology, biodiversity and natural so that they can be freely viewed and used online. The library can be searched or browsed by title, author or subject. Images from the publications can be used in publications, but remember to cite the source!

The Animal Diversity Web is an online database on the natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology of animals. Developed by the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology. It is an encyclopedia, science learning tool and virtual museum all in one site.

This site, from the Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology, provides information about North American Birds, Bird Conservation and birdwatching. It contains a bird guide with over 580 species that gives information on identification, life history, as well as videos and audio recordings.

Ornithology Exchange is a Wiki (collaborative site) related to ornithology. It is an online community of organizations and people interested in Ornithology. The site provides access to a wide variety of information including funding, meetings, journals, teaching and news. It also has other areas where members can post and share information on a wide variety of topics, links to ornithology journals and magazines, and other resources. Membership is free.

The Migratory Bird Program works with partners to protect, restore and conserve bird populations and their habitats by tracking migratory bird populations, improving outdoor bird-related experiences (including birdwatching and hunting), increasing awareness of the value of migratory birds and their habitats, and increasing the socioeconomic benefits derived from birds. They conduct surveys with bird conservation organizations, provide matching grants for conservation efforts, administer conservation laws, develop policies and regulations and issue permits to people and groups that are working to conserve birds. The website also provides data on migratory birds collected from bird surveys.

Partners in flight works to keep common birds common, help species that are at risk and create voluntary partnerships to conserve landbirds and their habitats. They maintain two databases. The Species Assesment Database provides data developed through the PIF species assessment process, which analyzes, evaluates and categorizes information on bird conservation. The Population Estimates Database provides access to population estimates of birds in the North American Landbird Conservation plan, which was based on breeding bird surveys from the 1990s.

eBird is a tools for birders that allows them to record the birds that they see, keep track of bird lists, explore online maps and graphs showing species and share sightings with other birders. The data input by birders can be used by scientists to study avain distribution, species richness, and biodiversity.

The BirdLife International Data Zone provides access to maps and reports on over 10,000 bird species, information about sites important to bird conservation, case studies on threats to birds, country profiles and bird ranges. It also provides a site that can be used to provide information on bird sightings.

The Global Raptor Information Network (GRIN) provides information on raptors (hawks, eagles, and falcons) that are active during the day and facilitates communication between raptor researchers and organizations interested in their conservation. The GRIN Species Database can be searched by species, family, country, region, continent, conservation status, population size and trend. An advanced search option can be used to search based on multiple criteria.
