SOC 100Y (Tollini): Obtaining PDF in Soc Abs

Obtaining PDFs from Soc Abs

Here's an example of how the process can work for finding PDFs from a Sociological Abstracts search, in this case for American Journal of Sociology. The process for articles from the other journals may not look exactly like this.

1. Once you identify the article you want to use, look for the Find It button if you do not see an immediate PDF link within your search results. The Find It button appears in two places. First, you'll see it in the results list:

Second, it will appear in the full record (if you click on the article title so that you can read the abstract (summary) of the article:

2. Go ahead and click on the Find It button in order to see the link or links to where this full article is available. In this case, we'll be linking out to our subscription with University of Chicago Press Journals.

3. Once we reach the publisher's website for this article, we look for the link to a PDF version. If you are linking out to the articles for one of the other journals, the interface may look different. Just keep in mind that you need a the link or button labeled "PDF" to download the file for your professor.

5. Finally, click on the button or link for PDF and go through the download process. This will be different depending upon the browser you are using, specifically where the downloaded files are saved, where the download commands and notifications show up on the browser interface, and how you have told the browser to manage PDF files. Some people have the browser save the PDF to the Downloads folder and then open it up in Acrobat Reader (my preference, see image below). Others have PDFs appear in a viewer window within the browser.
