The U.S. Congressional Serial Set: Maps in the Serial Set

A guide to searching the U.S. Congressional Serial Set

The Map Serial Set Search

WIU users have a second way to search the Serial Set: the U.S. Congressional Serial Set Maps.  This will only search and retrieve the maps that have been included in the Serial Set, not any of the text or other illustrations.  To find text documents in the Serial Set collection, see the previous tab in this LibGuide, "Searching in the Serial Set".

Searching Maps in the Serial Set

You can find maps throughout the main Serial Set database, but to limit *only* to maps, the map-specific search screen is better.  The search is similar, but with a few changes:

  • See the maps available using the browse feature on the bottom of the screen.  Find a map of a particular place under "Map Locations", or use "Map Subjects" to browse topics such as the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Civil War, air pollution, agricultural use, and much more.
  • You can also do a keyword search at the top of the screen.  A few tips:
    • Search for places (like Alabama or Chicago) in the "Geographic Location" rather than "Citation Text" for more specific results.
    • Put phrases in quotation marks (for example, "Lake Michigan").

Results Screen in the Map Search

The results screen in the Map Search is also similar to the main Serial Set Search:

  • Click on any title to see the full image of the map.
  • The links on the right side of the results screen can help limit your search to a specific subject, place, issuing organization, or related legislation.
