Writing Steps

The Basic Process

  1. Pick a Topic: Choose something you're really interested in or have a strong opinion about. Read up on it by checking out a few articles - this will help you understand the topic better and see different views on it.

  2. State Your Position: Write a one-sentence claim or argument that sums up your stance on the topic. This is your thesis statement - it's the main point you'll be making in your essay.

  3. Gather Evidence: Collect info to back up your thesis, including stuff that goes against your view. You'll need this to paint a well-rounded picture.

  4. Outline It: Take the material you've gathered and plan out your essay. You'll want an intro with your thesis, body paragraphs that explain and support your argument, and a conclusion that reinforces your position.

  5. Write It Up: Put your essay together, making sure to include references to your sources. Don't rush this part - take time to brainstorm, write, and edit.

  6. Get Feedback: Have someone read your essay and give you feedback using the "Draft Editing Questions." Then revise based on their input.

  7. Final Polish: Do one last check for any spelling or grammar issues. Read it out loud to yourself or to someone else to catch any awkward phrasing.
