The National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS), at the University of Minnesota Data Center, provides historical Census data and GIS boundary files for the United States between 1790 and 2013. Data is provided free of charge to registered users.

Provides a brief summary of statistical information on individual states and counties, including population, housing, business and geographical statistics.

An online guide that provides descriptive and statistical information about countries of the World. It includes information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and international issues for 266 countries of the World. It also provides summary statistics on a wide variety of topics.

A collection of historical and current data relating to food and agriculture for World countries. Includes information on production, trade, consumption, use, food security, pirces, resources, forestry and fisheries.

Provides economic, environmental and social statistics for World Countries from the OECD. Includes agriculture, demographics, environment, health, labor, energy, economics, and other topics.

The United Nations collects data on a wide variety of topics, including population, education, health, gender, crime, telecommunications and tourism.

Clicking on the Data tab on this site provides links to sources of demographic, social and economic statistics for World countries including some data back to 1950. It includes both summary statistics and a list of tables that include population and vital statistics, and data on migration, marital status, contraceptive use, religion, language, and literacy. Data can be displayed in a browser or downloaded.

The World Bank provides data on over 1200 topics including agriculture, development, infrastructure, aid, labor, social issues, economic policy, poverty, education, environment, science, technology and finances. The Data Catalog tab allows users to browse and sort World Bank data sets by popularity, alphabetically and revision date.

Issued twice a year, Global Economic Prospects provides information on global economic growth trends and their impact on developing countries. They include three-year global economic forecasts and ten year global scenarios. Subject appendices cover financial markets, trade, commodities, and inflation.

Bilateral Relations Fact Sheets (formerly known as Background Notes), which are prepared by the U.S. State Department, contain facts and summary statistics about the land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy, and foreign relations of countries, some dependencies, and special sovereignty areas.

Country studies, which are prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress, present descriptions and analyses of the history, society, economy, politics, national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world. Some are also available in hard copy in Government Publications; they can be found by searching WestCat for the Country name in the Title and adding the words Country Study (keyword; all of these).
