Biological Sciences: Photographs and Images

An open access collection of images, videos, and animations related to cells which contains a images on wide variety of organisms, cell types, and cellular processes. It was developed through a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

This site from NOAA contains photos that were taken by officers, scientists and engineers of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Image Library is a public domain collection of images, videos and other historical artifacts collected by the Fish & Wildlife Service. Images on this site can be used if credit is given to the photographer.

This site can be used to search for information on a specific topic developed by U.S. Government agencies. It is also possible to narrow the search results to a type of resource, such as images. Government publications, including photos in government publications, and photos taken by government employees are not copyrighted, so they can be used in presentations, but remember to cite your source! To find images, search for a topic (e.g. Black Footed Ferret) and then narrow the search results by choosing to view only images.

A consortium of natural history and botanical libraries is cooperatively digitizing older publications related to biology and biodiversity so that they can be freely viewed and used online. The library can be searched or browsed by title, author or subject. Because these publications are no longer copyrighted, the images in them can be used in papers. However, remember to cite the source!
