Biological Sciences: Using EndNote

Department Research Guides identify and define standard information retrieval tools for a specific department. Each guide was created and is maintained by the library liaison for that department. We encourage you to recommend resources for the guides.

Using EndNote

The WIU Libraries provide access to EndNote through our subscription to Science Citation Index. An extensive Library Guide on using EndNote is available through the Libraries at the link below.

Download the Biology Practice References below and save them to your desktop or another known location. To save them in Firefox or Chrome, right click on the page and choose Save Page As (Firefox) or Save As (Chrome). Import them into EndNote using the following instructions.

1. Log into EndNote. Click on the Collect tab and Import References.
2. Browse to the location of the file with the downloaded references (it will end in.RIS). Select the file to be imported. When asked to identify the Import Option, use RefMan RIS.
3. Use the pull-down next to the word To: to identify the group to which the references should be added, if any. Click Import.

The references that were imported deal with Corn Earworm (Helicoverpa zea) and Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus). There are some duplicates.

Use the instructions in the EndNote Basic guide to:

  • Look for and eliminate duplicates.
  • Set up groups for Corn Earworm and Monarch Butterfly and assign the references to groups.
  • Share references with a friend or colleague.

You can also search for references, download them and practice on your own.
