Finding Text Books: Find The Text Book

How to find out what text books you need using the STARS course search feature, and where to find and get them.

Good idea!

Search from Google

1. Searching by the ISBN  will open a Google search based on the number of the book! This is the quickest way to find the book and correct edition for sale online!

2. You can also search for books using the ISBN number on specific websites by doing a Google search using the [SITE] command. Type this into the search engine. For example to search for a book on Amazon, type:

site: amazon.com 0078026725

This will look for and locate the book if available, without having to go to the site first.

Bonus: this works for searching for ANYTHING on ANY SITE.

Buy or Rent Text Books

To Buy or Rent Text Books

1. The easiest way is to use the ISBN to search the WIU Bookstore. Go to the Textbooks, Order Textbooks.

2. Then on the Select Term and Departments page enter the ISBN number from your STARS course information.

This takes you to the course materials page. Now paste (or type) the ISBN into the Search For a Book tool. If the book is available it will pop up in the results.

An alternate way is to use the ISBN to search for the book and buy or rent it on other book websites like Amazon and Chegg. On these sites, you can usually just search from the homepage using the ISBN.

Finding Text books in WestCat and I-Share

  1. Go to the WestCat catalog (http://westcat.org/) and search for the title of the textbook you need.

  2. If the textbook is not available in the WestCat catalog, proceed to search for it through interlibrary loan.

  3. Select the "I-Share" libraries option to search for the textbook across the I-Share network of academic libraries.

  4. Make sure you are logged in to your library account before proceeding.

  5. Search for the textbook title in the I-Share catalog.

  6. Check the I-Share holdings to see if the textbook is available at any of the participating libraries.

  7. If the textbook is available, click on the "Request" button to open the book request form.

  8. On the book request form, select your preferred pickup location from the options provided at the bottom of the form.

  9. Submit the book request form to initiate the interlibrary loan process.

The textbook will be delivered to your selected pickup location, and you will be notified when it is ready for pickup. Remember to return the borrowed textbook by the due date to avoid any late fees or penalties.
