Using Information Effectively: Finding Information

Remember...

You will need to choose the types of information that will best answer your research question. Not all information is created equal!

Where to look

Breaking Coverage

To find early coverage of current or past events, search the internet for tweets, media special reports, or newspaper articles.

Magazines and Newspapers

Many magazines and newspapers provide access to their content online for free. Try searching for Time, Newsweek, or The New York Times.

Scholarly Journals

Scholarly journals can be a little harder to find. Most journals will hide their content behind a pay-wall. Try searching in the Directory of Open Access Journals for free content, or use research databases from your library.

Books and E-books

You don't have to go to Amazon and spend money on books. Google Books, Hathi Trust, and Internet Archive all have digitized academic books on many topics. And don't forget your library!

Government Publications

You can find federal governmental agency and legislative publications at the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications

Questions to ask yourself

What kind of source is this?

When was it published?

What is the author's purpose in writing this?

Does this provide me with what I need?
