SW 312 Social Work Research Methodology: Empirical Articles

What are Empirical Articles?

What is an empirical article?

An empirical article report on research that has been conducted by the author or authors (primary research). The research can be based on observations or experiments.

What types of research make an article an empirical article?

Quantitative and Qualitative research methods may be used.

Quantitative: numerical data an d establish causal relationships between two or more variables

Qualitative: Objectively and critically analyzes behaviors, beliefs, feelings, or values with few or no numerical data available for       analysis.

How can I tell if it meets the criteria of being empirical?

Check the publication is it considered to be scholarly?  This can be done by searching for the publication name in Ulrics.

In the abstract or article does it include the words study, observation or analysis of a number of participants.

Does the abstract or article include headings such as: Introduction, Literature review, Methodology, Results, Discussion, Conclusion and References.

The articles are generally lengthy. So if the article is 3 pages or less it probably will not meet your needs, often times it will be 10+ pages.
