Printing at the Malpass Library: Student Printing Quota

Quota/stipend only for black & white printing

Take note: the student printing quota or stipend is only for black & white printing. See Color Printing tab for more info.

Student Print Quota

From: http://www.wiu.edu/university_technology/student_resources/printing/ (August 2023)

"Black and White laser printing is provided to students through a 250 page print stipend per academic year at no additional cost.  Once the 250 pages have been printed, there is a $.10 per printed page charge for printing and Rocky Dollars is the charge-back method.  Duplexing (printing on both sides) is recommended as a two sided document counts as 1 page."

Q: Can my print quota be used up by purchasing other items on campus with Rocky Dollars? In other words, can I run out of prints because I buy too many coffees at the Union?

A: No. The 250 page quota is not just Rocky Dollars loaded by uTech onto a student's card. It is a credit in the PaperCut system only and therefore cannot be used up when buying other things on campus.

However, once a student runs through their quota and has to top it up with Rocky Dollars, the spending at that point is not differentiated. When a student sends a print job, the system first looks at that individual's print quota. If there are no prints left in the quota, it looks for Rocky Dollars next. In either case, there is a pop-up window they have to acknowledge to say they want to proceed. If the person's quota is gone and they don't have any Rocky Dollars, the print job will be denied.

Printing Denied?

If you are logged in with a student ecom account and all your print jobs are denied, it is related to your status in the Registrar and uTech systems:

  • not a current student?
  • did you just register or is it the first two weeks of the semester?

A temporary workaround is to log in as a guest. See instructions on the Printing Overview page. If the problem persists, you should speak with uTech at Stipes 126, 309-298-TECH, or support@wiu.edu

If you are logged in with a student ecom account and a single print job is denied, you may be trying to print too large of a job. As of August 2023: "There is a 50 page two-sided and 100 page single sided maximum per print job."

Adding Rocky Dollars for Printing

From: https://www.student.services.wiu.edu/web-apps/RockyDollars/Default.aspx (January 2022)

"Your on-campus Rocky Dollars with your WIU ID card requires you to add funds to your account so that your card becomes a 'declining balance' account. You can do this in person at the Housing Office on the first floor of Seal Hall or online via this website [link above].

To add points to your ID card (or to simply check your balance), please enter your ECOM user name and password. You will need a credit card (or debit card with a major credit card logo) to add points to your ID card. Please Note: It may take up to 10 minutes before the points addition will be available for use."

Quota and Printing Procedure

Student printing process on WIU computers (as of January 2022):

  1. Currently enrolled student is logged on to a WIU-owned computer with their ecom username and password.
  2. When the student wants to print a document, they use a print command within the relevant app or operating system.
  3. Student sees pop-up (see image) and must click on OK button.
  4. Print job is actually sent to the Find_Me_Printing queue. The computer monitor shows a “printer paused” message. This means that the system is waiting for the student to release the job from the queue.
  5. Student goes to campus release station, logs in with ecom credentials,  and clicks print once more for each job. If there are duplicates of a job, extras can be canceled. Student print stations in the Malpass Library are:
    • Level 1: in Digital Commons
    • Level 2 (entrance level): in Reference East area AND in back of 2nd floor classroom
    • Level 3: near 3rd floor classroom and CRC
  6. Document is released to the printer attached to that release station and account quota is actually debited.

Troubleshooting or Reporting Printing Problems

If you experience a problem with printing, here are some steps you can take:

  1. Ask a library staff member for assistance.
  2. Log in to uPrint, where you can see the history and status of print jobs and current quota amount.
  3. If after reviewing the information in uPrint you still feel that the system has not worked correctly, gather the following data and report it to uTech using one of their four ways of contact:
    • your account information
    • time you released the print job
    • name/location of release station
    • other pertinent details
