RDG 383 Library Skills: ILL

Literacy Instruction in the Early Grades

Introduction to Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

If an item that you need is not held by WIU or another I-Share library, all hope is not lost! It may be possible to acquire it through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Through ILL, you can request items from other libraries all over the world.

Always remember these steps:

  1. Check WestCat.
  2. If you can't find your item in WestCat, use I-Share.
  3. If you still can't find your item in I-Share, use ILL.

Interlibrary loan services can be used to request books, book chapters, articles, audiovisual materials, and more.

Placing an ILL Request

The easiest way to request an item through ILL is to begin with WorldCat.

Find the item that you need in the WorldCat catalog, and then click on "Request this item through WIU ILL."

If you are not already, you will be prompted to log in to your ecom account.

Once you are logged in, you will be brought to a request form that has already been filled in for you. Select the format at the top of the page.

Scroll to the address and contact information at the bottom of the page, and select campus location Macomb from the drop down menu.

Click "Submit Request."

Like I-Share, items requested through ILL must be picked up at Malpass; we cannot receive them at the Curriculum Library.

Books requested through ILL usually take 5-14 days to arrive, depending on availability and delivery methods. Articles requested through ILL can arrive in 3-10 days, depending on whether the file is received in an electronic format or photocopied and mailed. You will receive an email when your item is available online or to be picked up.
