Your Assignment

For your assignment, you need to:

  1. Select one disease theory (see handout at left) that explains yoga as medicine, based on your anthropological understanding of healing systems:

    2. naturalistic
    personalistic
    emotionalistic

  2. Select one of the following ailments and describe and contrast the Western and Yogic approaches to healing it:

    3. anxiety & panic attacks
    back pain
    depression
    diabetes
    insomnia
    high blood pressure

  3. Discuss the effect of ethnographic research (attending the yoga class) on your own viewpoint.

  4. You will also need to find and reference at least three articles that relate to your essay.

Thinking about Search Terms

If you don't find articles with the first search term you type in, think of other words that might work:

  • For healing, you could also try the terms medicine, therapy, health care...
  • For disease, you could also try the terms illness, sickness...
  • For a specific disease, try searching on both the common and the scientific name
Use the subject search or look for the thesaurus, which lists the search terms.
