Sociological Research: Research cycle

Research process

Research tips

  • Research is not a one-time process. You begin by reflecting on your research question, but then repeat the cycle to get better and better results.

  • Students often get frustrated searching for the perfect article. You may not find all of your variables in one article that employs your methodology.  Instead, try one of these strategies for broadening your literature review:
  1. Search for only two of your concepts at one time, rather than three or more.
  2. Use a broader term for one or more of your concepts.
  3. Use a related term for one or more of your concepts.
  4. Search for articles that discuss your methodology or how to measure one of your variables.
  5. Search for articles that apply theories to your research question.

  • Know when to ask for help.
