Gangs have been a problem in America for a long period of time. From a law enforcement perspective, gangs are very dangerous entities that drive up crime rates through the production and sales of illegal drugs, through organized violence against gangs in other neighborhoods that often leaves bystanders injured or worse, and through the trafficking and use of illegal firearms. From a community perspective, many neighborhoods are deemed as unenterable due to the presence of gangs and this leaves everyday citizens in fear for their lives when out in gang territories. Law enforcement and communities must work together to find programs backed by empirical evidence that can help curb the youth gang population and help solve the problem in the long term rather than focusing on the short term.
