PDF and PowerPoint Tips: PDF Tips

Print Multiple PDF Pages on One Piece of Paper

If you want to save paper by printing multiple PDF pages to one piece of paper, make sure to open the document in Adobe Acrobat Reader rather than a viewer window in email or WesternOnline. Then choose the Print option and click on the Multiple button under Page Sizing & Handling. You will get a choice of how many pages you want to fit on a piece of paper, and how to arrange them.

Finding Articles in PDF

When searching for full-text articles online, look for your article as a PDF file if possible. Each company has a different way of noting PDF availability, so just keep your eyes open once you reach a database or publisher website. Here are some examples:

Database/Publisher Image/Notation for PDF
EBSCO (databases)
PubMed Central database
Sage (journals)
Taylor & Francis (journals)

Each platform is different, but they all give you the option to download the article. Once you have the PDF file, you can attach it to an email or upload it to WesternOnline.

How to Hide a Dark Background Layer in Adobe Documents:

If you are printing a PDF Document or Form with a dark or black background and wish to conserve toner, you can try the following steps.

PDF Documents:

Step 1: Open a PDF file in Adobe Reader and click "View > Show/Hide > Navigation > Layers" to reveal the Layers panel (see the "Open the PDF Layers Panel" image on this page).

Step 2: If the document has layers, they will be displayed in the Layers panel on the left-hand side.

Step 3: Simply Click the "Eye" icon that appears before the name of the background layer (the name may vary). This action hides the background (see the PDF Layers Panel image below).

Step 3: Print the document.

PDF Forms:

Step 1: Open a PDF form in Adobe Reader, then press "Ctrl-P."

Step 2: Click the "Form Fields Only" item from the Comments and Forms control.

Step 3: Click "Print" to print the form fields without the background.
