Using Library Catalogs & Music Databases: Oxford Music Online (Grove)

Introduction to Oxford Music Online

Oxford Music Online is the access point for Grove Music Online, The Oxford Dictionary of Music, and The Oxford Companion to Music.

Searching

For the fastest search, use the Quick Search box at the top of each page. 



The Quick Search will default to searching Grove. When you conduct a search, direct title matches are displayed first, followed by full-text matches. 

To search in The Oxford Dictionary of Music and The Oxford Companion to Music, you will need to click the link at the top of the results page.


Entry Structure

Important information about the article appears right below the title. It includes the contributor(s), the date that the article was published and (if applicable) updated, and the doi (the persistent link to the article).



A table of contents is provided, which makes it easier to navigate within the article. Simply click on a section title to jump to that section. 



For composer entries, the Works tab includes a list of all  of the works written by that person.



Finally, there are convenient links at the top of the page to save the article as a PDF, email it to yourself, or view its citation (always remember to double check the formatting of a database-generated citation before including it in your paper!).


Logging Out

When you are done using Oxford Music Online, please remember to log out! Our license allows for a limited number of simultaneous users, and properly logging out will open usage of Oxford Music Online to another student.

To log out, simply click on the "Sign Out" button, which is located in the bottom right corner of every page. Closing the tab or browser will not log you out, so be sure to manually log out when you have finished your session!
