Department Research Guides identify and define standard information retrieval tools for a specific department. Each guide was created and is maintained by the library liaison for that department. We encourage you to recommend resources for the guides.

Introduction

Welcome to the Music Department Research Guide!

This guide is an introduction to the many resources available to you through the Music Library and beyond. It includes information about how to search the library catalog and understand call numbers; a selection of print and online resources available; and helpful hints for writing about music. Feel free to contact us with any questions, comments, or suggestions of additional resources to include. 

Music Library staff are available to assist you whenever the Music Library is open, so please don't hesitate to ask us for help!

About the Music Library

The Music Library houses a collection which includes over 12,000 books on music; 18,000 performing, study, and scholarly scores; 11,000 recordings; 500 videos/DVDs; and about 50 periodical titles as well as electronic access to many more. The collection focuses mainly on Western art music from the Middle Ages to the present. It also supports the School of Music curriculum in music therapy, music business, jazz, popular music, and world music. Twelve computer stations (10 PCs, 2 Macs) provide audio, video, and online research access, and there is an additional audio station to play cassettes and LPs.
